  • The selection committee has discussed having separate captains for different formats, but it is premature to talk about this.

Former Test cricketer Tanveer Ahmed has claimed that there is an agenda against Babar Azam, Pakistan’s cricket team captain, and it will continue until he is removed from his role. Despite leading Pakistan to the final of the T20 Asia Cup and T20 World Cup last year, Babar has faced criticism over his captaincy mindset. Pakistan also lost three home Test series against Australia, England, and New Zealand in 2020, which raised questions about Babar’s captaincy.

Tanveer stated that Babar will continue to face pressure regardless of the results, and until he is removed as captain, the agenda against him will persist. The cricketer-turned-analyst also said that Pakistan cannot focus on the upcoming ICC World Cup until the captaincy debate is resolved. Tanveer criticized critics who are putting pressure on Babar, and Chairman Ehsan Mani, who made comments about the captaincy.

Mani clarified in a recent interview with a local cricket website that Babar is a fantastic player and that his captaincy is something that the team management will decide in the future. For now, Babar has been retained as captain because he is the team’s primary player. Mani also revealed that he has consulted with Mickey Arthur on the matter, and the former coach has suggested that Babar should continue as captain for the upcoming New Zealand series.

The selection committee has also discussed the issue of having separate captains for different formats, but Mani believes it is premature to talk about this. He emphasized that for the New Zealand series, Babar is the team’s captain, and they should back him. Later on, the selection committee and Mickey Arthur will decide on the captaincy.
