Are Pakistan out of World Test Championship 2023?

Pakistan are having the worst Test season at home as they have failed to win even a single Test match. Recently, they have lost a three-match test series against England at home, with the final test to spare.

They failed to manage the Rawalpindi Test despite having things in their hands on various occasions. Yet having a chance to qualify for the World Test Championship 2023, they came across another defeat in the second test match and winded up on Monday in Multan.

The back-to-back defeats have diminished Pakistan’s chances of staying in the championship. Earlier, they lost the series against Australia, with two matches drawn. Babar Azam and co are now scheduled to tackle New Zealand in a test series at their home.

Mathematically, if Pakistan win their remaining matches of the WTC season, they can manage to qualify for the event’s final. However, realistically, they barely have a chance.

However, the consequences of the recent defeat are unbearable, eventually pulling them out of the WTC 23 race. It is pertinent to mention here that the WTC final is scheduled to be played in March next year.

Captain Pakistan accepts the team’s mistakes

Skipper Babar Azam has also admitted the mistakes Pakistan have been making lately, which is costing them the tests. While talking in a press conference, he emphasized how Pakistan have been failing to manage things in red-ball cricket.

Azam further narrated that they will try their best to bounce back, learning from their mistakes.

“Yes, we were not up to the mark in the first innings. We had a couple of soft dismissals. After that, we had a fightback in the bowling, and second innings, we fought well, but unfortunately, we did not finish it.”

“We have a simple plan to carry on the momentum; we had good partnerships between Imam and Saud and then Saud and Nawaz. The tail also fought well, but we didn’t finish well,”

He added,

“We made mistakes in the Test match; we could have won, we didn’t finish well against Australia, and now again, we should have finished well.”
