Asia Cup 2021 impossible to take place, here is why

The possibilities of the Asia Cup 2021 seem to be dimming after the busy cricket calendar of the respective year. Originally, the event was set to take place in 2020 but got terminated amidst the COVID-19 threats in the preferred hosts’ countries.

Having a glance at the busy cricket calendar 2021, the nations will be piling up the series that remained incomplete last year. Along with that, 2021 is full of cricket holding big events like the T20 World Cup. Also, the unavailability of the Asian teams during the mid-year almost makes Asia Cup 2021 impossible to commence ahead.

Ehsan Mani, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), earlier uttered about Pakistan’s unavailability in the tournament as the board has rescheduled the remaining matches of the HBL PSL 6 to commence by 1st June. Notably, the final of the event is set to take place on 20th June. The duration collides the schedule of the Asia Cup.

Not only Pakistan’s unavailability, but Team India will be taking on the Kane Williamson and co for competing to clinch the trophy of the ICC World Test Championship during June. India will also be looking to reschedule the IPL 2021 that parted ways in the mid.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are also looking to commence their T20 leagues somewhere near the window. Hence, the unavailability of the crucial teams and a busy schedule cannot let Asia Cup commence smoothly.

Now, the ACC authorities are looking to reschedule the event to 2022. The last version of the ACC event was held in 2018 when the men in blue led by Virat Kohli were declared as the winners. Since then, the poor health conditions keep on discarding the event that remains jeopardized in search of a window and event.

The selection of the venue is another mega problem as Pakistan was chosen as the original host for the 2020 season. As India and BCCI deny touring the cricket-loving nation amidst the Indo-Pak tensions, Sri Lanka was on the agenda to organize the Asia Cup.

As of now, Pakistan will entertain the Asia Cup 2022 whereas, Sri Lanka will be the hosts of the Asia Cup 2023 (original 2020 version) as the event will resume in two consecutive years due to the cancelation that occurred twice.
