Asia Cup 2022: Can Axar Patel fulfill Jadeja's slot?

Team India deals with another major blow since Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the remainder of Asia Cup 2022. Earlier, toe-crusher Jasprit Bumrah was expelled, which was meant to be affecting their bowling line-up. As of now, missing all-rounder services is another sturdy blow.

Jadeja, well settled with the bat and the ball, suffered a knee injury, ending his Asia Cup 2022 tenure., This is not the first time he has sustained a knee injury. However, the board did not feel the severity of it last time when the all-rounder faced the same issue during Ind vs WI ODI series.

He has been replaced by Axar Patel, who is the like-for-like replacement. However, Patel’s batting venture is far below average in comparison to senior Jadeja. The youngster can either be a perk for the side or a burden, depending on the approach he follows. It is now to see how well he fits himself into Jadeja’s slot.

The newly-named replacement has played six Tests, 44 ODIs, and 25 T20Is. While donning the Indian jersey in the mentioned number of games, he has plucked 39, 53, and 21, respectively, alongside 197, 273, and 147 runs. On the other hand, Jadeja has featured in 60 Tests, 171 ODIs, and 64 T20Is with 2523, 2447, and 457, and 242, 189, and 51 scalps to his name sequentially.

Axar was one of the standby players the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier named and will join the team in a short course. Notably, the men in blue will encounter Pakistan in their first match of the Super 4 round, scheduled for Sunday. However, Pakistan’s qualification for Super 4 depends on their victory over Hong Kong in the current Group Stage match going on.

Undoubtedly, Jadeja was India’s vital cog in both of their first round’s matches versus Pakistan and Hong Kong, respectively. His batting in the middle will surely be missed. Since India are scheduled to host Australia and South Africa before their T20 World Cup 2022 venture, they hope for a quick recovery of Jadeja.
