Pakistani skipper Babar Azam has surpassed the record of former South African cricketer Hashim Amla to score the most runs in 86 ODI innings. Featuring in the second ODI versus the West Indies at Multan Cricket Stadium, he scored 77 runs to complete 4441 runs in the format in the 86th inning whereas, Amla earlier tallied 4434 runs in 86 ODI innings.
Azam, the highest-run scorer in 86 ODI innings has also scored more runs than any cricketer in the 85th ODI inning, which came during the first ODI of the ongoing series versus the West Indies on June 8th. He could have broken one more record, however, fell short of a few runs to equal Kumar Sangakkara’s record of smashing four consecutive ODI centuries as Babar departed on 77 coming from 93 balls in the second ODI.
During the Pak vs WI ODI series opener, he also broke former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli’s record becoming the fastest to 1000 ODI runs as a captain. Babar took only 13 innings to do so whereas, Kohli achieved the feat in his 17th inning as a skipper followed by AB De Villiers and Kane Williamson, who completed 1000 ODI runs as a captain in 20th and 22nd inning respectively.
Babar has always been a delight to watch for cricket fans. His inning during Pak vs WI 1st ODI brought a couple of other records as he is now the only cricketer to smash three ODI centuries on two occasions. Before scoring a hundredth versus the West Indies, he scored two back-to-back tons against Australia in April, during the home series. Before this time, he scored tons solely versus the West Indies thrice back in 2016.
It must be noted Pakistan totalled 275 runs on the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs as the quality bowling from the West Indies halted them below 300 in the going-on match. The guests are battling to avoid a series loss and so far, the results look to favour them.
