Babar Azam is not in his prime form, Ricky Ponting believes

Ricky Ponting on Babar Azam

Ricky Ponting, a Hall of Famer at the ICC, has praised Babar Azam and is excited to see what the Pakistan captain will achieve in the future. Babar recently won both the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and the Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year in the 2022 ICC Awards, beating out strong competition in both categories.

In an interview on The ICC Review, Ponting shared that he is scared by the thought of what Babar can accomplish in the future. Babar’s statistics are impressive across all three international formats. In 2022, he accumulated 1,184 Test runs at an average of almost 70, 679 runs at an average of 85 in ODI cricket, and led his team to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in Australia, scoring 735 runs with a strike rate of 123 throughout the year in T20I play.

While some may see these figures as the peak, Ponting believes that there is more to come from Babar. He stated that most batters reach their prime in their early thirties, and that Babar still has some room for improvement. He compared Babar to Steve Smith and David Warner, who are also playing at their best in their early thirties.

“So I think Babar’s still got a little bit of improvement to come, which is a pretty scary thought with what he’s been able to do, pretty much across all three formats over the last three, four years. I love watching him play. I think there’s some room for improvement, let’s hope we see it,” Ponting said.

Overall, Ponting has high expectations for Babar Azam and is excited to see him continue to excel in the future. With his impressive statistics and potential for growth, Babar is definitely a player to keep an eye on in the world of cricket.
