As the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is set to kick off on March 31, cricket fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the return of the world’s biggest T20 league. However, with a packed schedule of games, concerns have been raised over the fitness of Indian contracted bowlers, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to issue a warning to IPL franchises.
The BCCI has reportedly advised franchises to use caution with Indian bowlers during the IPL, urging them to avoid overusing them and to focus on strengthening and training instead. The board has also suggested that teams limit the amount of time that Indian bowlers spend in the nets to prevent fatigue and potential injury, as the national team prepares for the World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup later in the year.
According to a BCCI official quoted by the Indian Express, franchises have been instructed to avoid over-bowling Indian team bowlers until the first week of May. After this point, players who are in contention can gradually increase their time in the nets. The BCCI has pledged to keep a close eye on the situation and will be in contact with all franchises again as the tournament progresses.
Many Indian-contracted bowlers are expected to take part in the IPL, including the likes of Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Deepak Chahar, among others. Given the injuries that have already impacted the Indian squad, the BCCI’s cautious approach is a welcome move. Following the conclusion of the IPL, India will take on Australia in the WTC final, which is scheduled to take place from June 7, 2023.
Overall, the BCCI’s focus on the fitness of Indian bowlers is a positive step, ensuring that the national team has access to the best possible talent for the upcoming international fixtures. While fans may be disappointed to see some of their favorite players taking a reduced role in the IPL, the long-term benefits of prioritizing player health and well-being cannot be overstated. With the world’s eyes on the Indian cricket team, the BCCI’s actions are a reflection of their commitment to maintaining the team’s competitive edge in the months and years to come.
