The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made an official announcement on Saturday, unveiling the squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The squad features the return of talented pacer Shaheen Afridi, who will be joining uncapped batter Mohammad Huraira and all-rounder Aamir Jamal. This marks Pakistan’s first assignment in the third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.
Expressing his excitement, Shaheen Afridi shared his eagerness to make a comeback in Test cricket after a year-long absence. The pacer expressed his gratitude to the fans for their support during his injury and revealed his determination to achieve a century of wickets in Test cricket. Shaheen is looking forward to making an impactful comeback in Sri Lanka, the same country where he suffered his injury.
Haroon Rashid, the Pakistan chief selector, congratulated all the selected players, particularly Mohammad Huraira and Aamir Jamal, acknowledging their impressive performances over time. Rashid explained that the squad was carefully chosen based on the conditions and challenges that the players are expected to face in Sri Lanka.
The selection was made with an emphasis on finger spinners, considering the favorable conditions for them. Alongside them, Abrar Ahmed’s mystery spin adds variety to the bowling attack. The squad also includes four pacers to provide ample resources to the captain and team management. With a strong batting lineup, Rashid expressed confidence in the team’s performance in the upcoming Test matches.
Rashid reassured the players who missed out on selection, emphasizing that they are still part of the plans for the future. He encouraged them to seize opportunities in domestic cricket and during Shaheens’ tours to stay prepared and ready for future challenges.
The Pakistan players are scheduled to assemble in Karachi on July 3 for a training camp before departing for Sri Lanka on July 9. The detailed itinerary of the tour will be announced by Sri Lanka Cricket in the near future.
