With 15 matches left to play in the league stage of IPL 2023, there remain nearly 33,000 possible combinations of results. Cricfolks looks at each of these possibilities to calculate the chances of individual teams making it to the playoffs. As things stand, two teams are almost certain to make the playoffs, one other is a strong favourite to do so, and none of the others are as yet definitely out. Also, any of them barring DC can, in fact, tie for the top spot.
Intense Race for IPL 2023 Playoffs: Which Teams Will Make the Cut?
GT – Almost Certain of a Playoff Spot, Can Aim for Top Position
GT (Team A) is already certain to finish in one of the top three slots in terms of points. The lowest they can finish is tied third, and their chances of being the sole leader are 73.5%. It is, however, still theoretically possible that they miss out on NRR after finishing in a tie with more than one other team for the third spot.
CSK – High Chances of Securing a Top Four Finish
CSK (Team B) already has high chances of making it to the top four on points, which have now reached 98.6% after Wednesday’s win. Nearly 32,300 of the remaining 32,768 combinations of results put them in that bracket either singly or jointly.
MI – Strong Probability of Making the Playoffs, But NRR Could Be Crucial
Currently in third place, MI (Team C) has a 76.1% chance of making the top four on points, a little better than three in four. However, this includes situations in which NRR could come into play.
LSG – Fourth Spot Currently, but Likely to Miss Out on Playoffs
Despite being in fourth spot currently, LSG (Team D) is more likely than not to miss out on the playoffs with a 44.7% chance of getting into the top four. Even that includes scenarios in which they are only joint fourth, some of them with multiple teams.
RR – Fighting for a Playoff Spot with a Little Better than One in Three Chances
Currently in fifth place, RR (Team E) has chances of making the top four on points that are just a bit better than one in three, or 35.9%. Once again, this includes scenarios with two or more teams tied for the fourth spot.
KKR – Similar Probability as RR to Finish in the Top Four
KKR (Team F) is now in sixth spot, but their chances of finishing in the top four in terms of points, either singly or jointly, are the same as RR’s at 35.9%.
PK – Slightly Over One in Three Chance of Securing a Playoff Spot
PK (Team G) also has slightly over a one in three chance of finishing among the top four on points, either singly or jointly. To be precise, they have a 34.1% chance of achieving that.
RCB – Loss to MI Hampers Chances, But Still a Fighting Probability
Tuesday’s loss to MI has severely dented RCB’s (Team H) chances of finishing in the top four, which are down to 34.5%. Even this includes situations of teams tied on points for the last spot.
SRH – Slim Chances, but Can Still Aim for the Top Spot with All Wins
Ninth-placed SRH (Team I) has less than a one in four (23.4%) chance of finishing among the top four on points. However, this tournament has been so even that they can still finish tied for the top spot if they win all their remaining games.
DC – Struggling to Make the Playoffs, Chances Limited to 6.9%
Languishing at or near the bottom for most of the tournament, DC (Team J) can still make it to the playoffs, but their chances of making the top four are no more than 6.9%. Even if they win all their remaining matches, they can at best tie for the third or fourth spot, and most of those scenarios involve multiple teams.
The race for the playoffs in IPL 2023 is reaching a crucial stage, with teams fighting tooth and nail for a spot in the top four. While some teams are almost certain to secure their places, others are battling against the odds to keep their playoff hopes alive. With numerous permutations and combinations still in play, the remaining matches promise to be exhilarating as teams leave no stone unturned in their quest for IPL glory.
