IPL 2023 viewership breaks 2019 record

The 2023 edition of the IPL has proven to be an electrifying spectacle, captivating fans with numerous nail-biting encounters throughout the tournament. With each passing day, viewers have been enthralled by the enthralling cricketing action, staying glued to their television screens. In a remarkable achievement, Disney Star, the official broadcaster of the IPL, has achieved the highest viewership in the history of the tournament for the first 66 matches, as per data from the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India.

According to the data released by BARC, the first 66 games of IPL 2023 garnered an unprecedented viewership of 48.2 crore on the Disney Star Network. This exceptional figure surpasses the previous highest viewership recorded during the 2019 season, establishing a new record. The media giant has witnessed a staggering on-year growth in weekly Television Rating Points (TVR) of 43% during the seventh week. Overall, the TVR growth stands at 32% when compared to the previous edition after 66 matches. Notably, Disney Star achieved this feat in just 29 matches, breaking the viewership record set during the entire 2022 edition.

BARC’s data further reveals that within 29 matches, the TV viewership crossed the 40 crore mark, demonstrating a remarkable growth of nearly 24% in TVR when compared to the previous season. The battle for IPL’s digital rights was fiercely contested between Disney Star and Viacom18 for the ongoing edition, while JioCinema offered free streaming services on its platform, adding to the intense competition.

Both Disney Star and Jio witnessed a surge in viewership, employing various strategies to attract maximum viewers to their platforms. The inclusion of several cricketing superstars, combined with innovative features and effective marketing campaigns, contributed to the exponential growth of the IPL in both the television and digital domains in 2023.

During the first qualifier match between the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings, JioCinema recorded an impressive 2.5 crore concurrent viewers. In contrast, the peak concurrency on Disney Star’s network reached 5.6 crore during the Gujarat Titans’ match against the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings, marking the highest viewership for the season thus far.

Additionally, in the seventh week of the tournament, four more matches on Disney Star’s network witnessed a peak concurrency of over 3 crore viewers, bringing the total number of games with such high concurrency to 40 in IPL 2023. The clash between the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders recorded the highest peak concurrency during the seventh week, reaching 4.2 crore viewers. However, the ultimate peak concurrency of 5.6 crore was attained during the match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans.

IPL 2023 has become a spectacular sporting extravaganza, captivating audiences with its thrilling cricketing action. With record-breaking viewership figures and intense competition between broadcasting platforms, this season has undoubtedly etched its name in the history books of the Indian Premier League.
