Is PCB offering head coach role to Azhar Mehmood?

Former Pakistani cricketer, Azhar Mahmood, has cleared the air surrounding rumours that he refused the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) offer to become the head coach for the Afghanistan and New Zealand series. Mahmood stated that he did not refuse the position but could not commit to the national side while still being a part of the Surrey County Cricket Club.

During an interview with a cricket website, Mahmood confirmed that he was approached by the PCB to become the head coach for both series. He expressed that his commitment was with Surrey and that he needed to check with the county club’s management before accepting any offers. Although he was uncertain whether he could take the New Zealand job, Mahmood was prepared to coach the Pakistan team for the Afghanistan series after receiving approval from Surrey.

Mahmood clarified that he did not refuse the offer for the Afghanistan series and stated, “I said my commitment is with Surrey, so let me find out with Surrey first. I am not sure they will allow me to do the New Zealand job, but you know I can do this series. So they [PCB] said okay, you have to do one series, that’s fine.” He continued, “We need someone, and then in the end, they went with someone else, which is absolutely fine, you know, like they found someone to do both the series.”

Mahmood believes that the PCB may not have extensive plans for coaching and that they may be more short-term focused, changing from series to series. He stated, “There were no long-term plans; they were short-term- series by series thing. For me, because I have got my own commitments, and as you know, I am still with Surrey, and the season has already started.”

In conclusion, Azhar Mahmood has set the record straight regarding the rumours surrounding his refusal to become the head coach for Pakistan’s cricket team for the Afghanistan and New Zealand series. Although he could not commit to both series due to his existing commitments with Surrey, he was willing to coach the Pakistan team for the Afghanistan series. However, the PCB ultimately went with someone else for both series.

Overall, Mahmood’s clarification puts an end to the rumours that were circulating about him and the PCB’s coaching plans.
