Is Shakib Al Hasan retiring from cricket?

Bangladesh’s all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan has talked about his fate in international cricket. He believes he will have to give up on one of the two formats of cricket and is likely to stay away from Test cricket.

He assumes in order to focus solely on one format perfectly, he will have to compromise on the other. Shakib may even avoid the One-Day Internationals that are not part of the ODI Super League.

While clearing his point, he mentioned that he will not retire from red-ball cricket as of now, but will rethink in which format to be fully available.

“I know which format to give importance or preference. The time has come for me to think about Test cricket. This is the fact: whether I will play Tests or not. And even if I do, how I will play the format. I also need to consider if I need to participate in ODIs where no points are at stake. I don’t have any other option.”

It seems like he is yet to make a decision and say he can even stop playing T20Is after the 2022 World Cup.

“I am not saying I will retire from Tests. It might even happen that I stop playing T20Is after the 2022 T20 World Cup. I can play Tests and ODIs. But playing three formats is almost close to impossible. Playing two Tests in 40-42 days is not fruitful. It encourages one to play selectively.”

Shakib is very much confident with his move as he stated,

“I will definitely plan well with BCB, and then go forward. It will be the smart thing to do. If it happens in January, I will know what I am doing for the rest of the year,”

The potent all-rounder is Bangladesh’s top wicket-taker in ODIs, T20Is, and Tests with 277, 117, and215 wickets in 215, 94, and 59 matches sequentially. He is the country’s second-highest run-getter in T20Is and ODIs with 1894 and 6600 runs to his name.
