New Zealand‘s captain, Kane Williamson has surpassed India’s Virat Kohli and Australia’s Steve Smith to become the World’s number one Test batsman. Appearing on the first spot of the ICC test rankings for the batsmen, Williamson has become the first player since 2015 to hold the first spot as any New Zealander lastly occupied it 5 years back.
His milestone comes as his side is playing the test series against Pakistan. Scoring 129 in the first test match and a double century earlier in December against West Indies have bloomed his test rankings.
Notably, Smith, who had a poor start this summer, has been dropped to the third spot. Aside from a year ban, it has happened for the first time that Smith has been left out without first or second position since November 2015. Since the pandemic, the Australian batter stayed at the top of the ICC Test rankings for the batsmen.
However, in ongoing India vs Australia, ongoing Vodafone test series, the Kiwi skipper has an open opportunity to regain his first position.
