Kohli's test average falls below 50

The last three years have been nothing but an ‘era of struggle, heartbreaks, and disappointment’ for Virat Kohli. He, who is on the verge of amassing his first international ton since 2019, saw two similar dismissals in the second Test versus Sri Lanka; both in a similar manner, dragging his test average below 50, for the first time since 2017.

Kohli has been the only batter to maintain a test average of 50+ since 2017 but following his struggling with the bat from the times he has been looking for tricks to register a hundred, his failure is not behind the curtains. It is not only about a hundred but the ex-skipper has continually been dipping to put up some decent scores.

In 2020, he could feature in only three Tests gathering 74 runs. The upcoming year saw him totalling 536 runs in 11 games. However, in the calendar year, Kohli has yet donned the Indian jersey in three Tests scoring 189 runs, with a half-century, which is pretty decent to the last two years. The fans anticipate seeing their superstar bouncing back, with a hundred. Kohli will have to score with the uproar in India’s next Test matches to re-get the Test average above 50.

The right-handed batter averages 49.95 at the moment. If he would have slammed 43 or more runs in the ongoing Test match versus Sri Lanka, his average would have been 50+ but since Kohli managed 23 runs in the first, and 13 runs in the second inning, his record of being the only cricketer with 50+ test average since 2017 shattered.

The former captain, dull on confidence, failed to rectify the pitch and was sent back to the pavilion in the same manner, the LBWs, in both innings. It must be noted that despite his failure from the last few years, his excellency in all formats of cricket gives major hopes to the fans of Kohli bouncing back.

The star cricketer took over Test captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2014. He has been India’s most successful red-ball captain with the highest winning percentage. Also, Kohli is one of the very few Indians to play in 100 Test matches. He has  8043 runs in 101 Test matches.
