Former Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad has advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to have serious conversations with skipper Babar Azam. He says the board should ask him if the captaincy pressure is affecting his current performance.
Recently, a sharp decline was noticed in Azam’s performances throughout the Asia Cup 2022. However, he has got together himself, scoring pretty finely onwards. Yet, Miandad feels there is a need to assess if captaincy pressure is being an obstacle in Azam’s performances.
“Babar is a world-class batsman. But the board should ask him if captaincy is taking a toll on him. There needs to be an honest conversation between him and the board,”
Notably, the right-handed batsman became Sarfaraz Ahmed’s successor as a skipper in the T20I format and later on took charge of Test and ODI formats. He has been achieving various feats across all formats with dominant showcases with the bat.
The former cricketer has advised Babar only to continue with the captaincy if he feels his performances are not affected by its pressure. The statement reads,
“If he feels he can do both — perform with the bat and lead in the field — then the captaincy should stay with him. However, the board should clarify to Babar that he is their preferred choice for captain,”
Azam is currently busy in the home series against England. The final match of the seven-match T20I series is scheduled for 2nd October 2022 at Gadaffi Stadium. The 27-years old is the second-highest run-getter after his mate Mohammad Rizwan. Where the wicketkeeping batter has scored 315 runs from five games so far, Azam has amassed 281 runs from six games.
