Mohammad Hafeez appointed as team's coach for Australia tour

  • Mohammad Hafeez appointed Team Director by PCB, replacing Mickey Arthur.
  • Hafeez to lead coaching staff during the Australia tour, marking a shift from his playing role.
  • Shan Masood recommended by Hafeez as Test captain, signaling significant changes in Pakistan cricket leadership.

In a significant development in Pakistan cricket, Mohammad Hafeez has assumed the role of Team Director, marking him as the most influential figure in the country’s cricket landscape. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Hafeez to this key position, succeeding Mickey Arthur.

As Team Director, Hafeez is set to travel with the squad during the upcoming Australia tour, taking on coaching responsibilities. Notably, he will play a pivotal role in forming the entire coaching staff, covering aspects like batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, reflecting the PCB’s trust in his leadership.

With this new responsibility, Hafeez will shift his focus from playing, and fans will no longer see him in action on the field. Hafeez, a prominent figure in leagues like the Pakistan Super League (PSL), faces potential financial losses due to the termination of existing contracts.

In addition to his coaching role, Hafeez has recommended Shan Masood as the Test captain to Zaka Ashraf, Chairman of the PCB Management Committee. Hafeez values Masood’s leadership qualities, citing his educational background and ability to foster team unity as assets that could positively impact the team environment.

The PCB’s decision to part ways with the entire coaching staff, including Director Cricket Mickey Arthur, signals a comprehensive restructuring of roles within the coaching setup. Head coach Grant Bradburn and batting coach Andrew Puttick will now shift to roles associated with the National Cricket Academy rather than the national men’s team, marking a strategic overhaul in the coaching hierarchy.
