  • Haris Rauf breaks unwanted record, conceding 533 runs in 9 innings during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
  • England’s Adil Rashid’s 2019 record surpassed as Rauf becomes the top run-conceder in a single World Cup.
  • Despite taking 15 wickets, Rauf’s struggle with an economy rate of 6.74 places him among the bowlers conceding over 500 runs.

During the recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup match between Pakistan and England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, fast bowler Haris Rauf found himself in the record books, unfortunately for an unwanted reason. Rauf conceded a staggering 533 runs in the tournament, surpassing the previous record set by England leg-spinner Adil Rashid in 2019.

Despite his commendable feat of taking 15 wickets in nine innings, Rauf struggled with an economy rate of 6.74, marking him as the fourth bowler in World Cup history to concede over 500 runs in a single edition.

The defending champions, England, dominated the game, posting a formidable total of 337 runs. The foundation for their innings was laid by the opening pair of Dawid Malan (39) and Jonny Bairstow (59), who combined for an impressive 82-run partnership in just 13.3 overs. Joe Root (60) and Ben Stokes (84) further solidified England’s position with a substantial 132-run stand, creating a commanding position.

As the innings progressed, skipper Jos Buttler (27) and Harry Brook (30) played vital cameos, ensuring England finished strongly and set a challenging target of 338 runs. The Pakistani bowlers, led by Rauf with three wickets, made efforts to contain the English batting lineup. Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr contributed with two wickets each, but Rauf’s record-breaking concession of runs remained a notable statistic.

Rauf’s feat places him at the top of the list for the most runs conceded in a single World Cup, surpassing Rashid’s previous record of 526 runs in 2019. Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka came close to the record but fell short by just one run, finishing the 2023 World Cup with 525 runs in nine innings.
