County Championship: Imam ul Haq signed by Somerset

Somerset have signed a deal with Pakistani opener Imam ul Haq for the final four games of the current County Championship season. Imam will play along with the likes of Rilee Rossouw, Craig Overton, Tom Banton, and other big names.

As far as other Pakistani players are concerned, Babar Azam has been Somerset’s valuable player since 2020 in the T20 format and his counterpart Azhar Ali has been a popular overseas signing too. He played the 50-over format three years back and led the team to the title.

The director of the Club, Andy Hurry revealed that they are using a long-term relationship with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to get Imam’s contract through a No-Objection Certificate and visa. He is delighted to have Pakistan’s experienced Test player in the four games of the County Championship and excited to see what Imam will bring on and off the field.

“Imam-ul-Haq is an outstanding batter who will bring quality and a wealth of experience to our environment. To be able to bring in an established Test match player for the final LV= Insurance County Championship matches of the season is a coup for us with so much international cricket being played during this important period. We have a long-standing working relationship with the PCB and we are grateful to them for their assistance in helping us to sign a player of this calibre. We are genuinely excited about what he will add to the club both on and off the field.”

Notably, Imam has been the first-choice player for Pakistan in the red-ball format. He has also been named in the team’s squad against Sri Lanka in the upcoming series. He revealed that he discussed his signing with the club mates and understand County Championship as a challenge coming forward.

“I have heard a lot about the quality of Somerset from Babar Azam and Azhar Ali,” he said. “It is a club with a good reputation and great support. I look forward to representing the county and contributing to some good wins in the County Championship.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Imam has been signed as a replacement of Matt Renshaw. Somerset have struggled in the Championship and are ninth in the 10-team Division One, this season. However, they have a game in hand on most of the bottom half of the table.
