Pakistan cricket's new coaches speak on their appointments

Pakistan cricket is brimming with anticipation as it welcomes two renowned coaches into its fold. Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, appointed to lead the white-ball and red-ball teams respectively, have shared their insights and aspirations in a recent podcast with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). As they gear up for their respective challenges, Kirsten and Gillespie offer glimpses into their coaching philosophies and the road ahead for Pakistan cricket.

Gary Kirsten, known for his successful stints with the Indian and South African teams, expressed his excitement about delving into Pakistan cricket, particularly highlighting his interest in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). “Not following Pakistan cricket very closely until I was offered the opportunity… I watched bits and pieces of short format cricket and then I watched Pakistan Super League,” Kirsten revealed. His familiarity with the players through various tournaments sets a promising stage for his coaching tenure.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s cricketing prowess, Kirsten aims to unlock the team’s true potential. “There is always an expectation that [Pakistan] should be a high-performing team… It’s always wonderful… when you can help them unlock the real potential,” he remarked. He sees coaching Pakistan as a privilege and aims to add value to the team’s performance in limited-overs cricket, recognizing Pakistan as one of the top coaching jobs globally.

“If you’re a cricket lover internationally, you are very familiar with the Pakistan players because they’re all over the place and it’s great watching them play cricket,” he added.

“I think Pakistan sits as one of the top four to five coaching jobs in the world internationally. The proposition to work with some of the best cricketers in the world was appealing to me. What is important is that I have the opportunity to work with some of the best cricketers in the world and that excites me,” he added.

Jason Gillespie is the Pakistan cricket team’s new red-ball coach

Transitioning to the red-ball format, Jason Gillespie brings his coaching ethos centered on hard work, discipline, and entertainment. “I like hardworking players and believe in discipline… I want to showcase our skills to the crowds, to our supporters,” Gillespie emphasized. He stresses the importance of communication and collaboration with the players and the captain, envisioning a collective journey towards success.

Gillespie’s focus lies on the upcoming challenges, starting with the series against Bangladesh followed by England and South Africa. He acknowledges the rigors of Test cricket but exudes confidence in the team’s preparation and determination. “If you prepare well, put your best foot forward, then we’ll give ourselves the best chance to have some success,” Gillespie asserted.

He further added that, “Obviously, the ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025 for Pakistan is going to be a challenge; there’s no question about that. But, we’ll just take each series as it comes,”

“The first opportunity that I’ll be involved in will be against Bangladesh at home, and I am looking forward to it. We’ll just take each series and each Test match as it comes.”

Both coaches bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to Pakistan cricket. With Kirsten’s strategic acumen and Gillespie’s emphasis on hard work and communication, the stage is set for an exciting chapter in Pakistan’s cricketing journey. As they embark on their coaching stints, Pakistani fans eagerly await the transformation and success these seasoned mentors will bring to their beloved team.
