Pakistan ends year-long winless streak in Tests

Pakistan’s year-long winless streak in Test cricket came to an end with a remarkable victory against Sri Lanka in Galle. The Babar Azam-led team’s last Test win was also achieved in Galle on July 20, 2022, and over the past year, they had faced two losses and four draws.

In a thrilling first Test, Pakistan secured a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The key contributor to their success was Saud Shakeel’s brilliant double century in the first innings.

On the final day of the match, Pakistan resumed their run-chase of 131 runs at 48-3, with Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq at the crease. Azam scored a valuable 24 runs off 28 balls, including five fours, before being dismissed. Saud Shakeel also played a vital role, scoring 30 runs in 38 balls before his dismissal.

However, Imam-ul-Haq showcased an impressive knock, remaining unbeaten on 50 runs, including four fours and a six. And it was Agha Salman who stole the show by smashing a six on the very first ball he faced, helping Pakistan reach the target.

In their second innings, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 279 on day four, setting a target of 131 runs for Pakistan to win the match.

Saud Shakeel’s outstanding performance extended beyond the win as he achieved his maiden double century in Tests during the rain-hit opening match.

After the match, Saud Shakeel spoke about his approach to build partnerships, remain positive, and find runs. He emphasized their expertise in playing sweep and reverse sweep shots, particularly due to his familiarity with spin conditions, being from Karachi.

Pakistan’s triumphant win in Galle brought an end to their Test drought, marking a significant moment for the team and elevating the excitement for the upcoming matches.
