Pakistan in semifinal amidst all the odds

WC 22: Pakistan becomes second side to qualify for semifinal

Amidst all the odds, and overcoming all the ‘slim chances’, Pakistan have finally tackled the road to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. They have thrashed away Bangladesh in the last encounter of the Super 12 stage, becoming the second team to reach the semifinal after New Zealand of Group 1.

Notably, the chances to qualify were extremely rare after the men in green lost to India and Zimbabwe in a final over a thriller, respectively. However, they managed to thumb up big against the Netherlands, South Africa, and Bangladesh sequentially, alongside all ifs and buts scenarios working in their favour. It feels like nature has wholly worked in Pakistan’s favour as they have overcome all the obstacles.

Pakistan now are placed second with three out of five wins on the Group 2 points table and six points. Apart from their win against Bangladesh, Netherlands’ winning versus South Africa earlier today has played a vital role in Babar Azam and co’s qualification for the next stage.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, and their decision did not fall in their laps much. They could only amass 127 runs, with Najmul Hasan’s 54 and the rest contributing underdogs. The big honour goes to Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has marked an absolute comeback. He managed three wickets in the last game and picked a four-wicket haul today.

Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed tugged off two and one wickets apiece. As far as chasing is concerned, Mohammad Rizwan and Babar continued their inadequate showcase and added 32 and 25 runs at below-par strike rates. However, Mohammad Haris and Shan Masood hurried up things, scoring 31 off 18 and 24 off 14, respectively.
