Pakistan tried 17 players in T20Is at 5, 6 in short span

Ever wondered why Pakistan are consistently failing at the middle order despite trying the young, experienced combinations? Middle-over, often composing the 5th and 6th batting spots has witnessed 17 Pakistani players since the last management took over the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) control.

After Misbah ul Haq was appointed the chief selector, head coach of the board, his regime as the selector had to be annulled amidst the ‘not more than one role in PCB’ policy and the vast criticism.

A few days later, Mohammad Wasim was elected the selector of the national board. Having Younis Khan and Waqar Younis as the batting and bowling coaches after Grant Flower, Azhar Mehmood were canned, the team has been under the trial of numerous 5th and 6th number batsmen following the mutual decisions of the whole management.

Fact: Pakistan have tried 17 different players in T20Is at 5 & 6 since the new management took over? Pakistan will never be able to develop a player for those positions if someone doesn’t get a consistent run.

Trying 17 players is not something that sounds appropriate – that too under two years. Probably this is why Pakistan’s middle order is failing to generate the desired results.

The 17 among them are Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah, Danish Aziz, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Babar Azam, Azam Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Sohaib Maqsood, and Umar Akmal.

The mentioned players have been layered over the 5th and 6th batting spots from 2019 to the present on and off adding only 548 runs together. With no proper and consistent chances given to either of them, Pakistan is yet to witness their rise.

We have frequently seen the team’s batting collapse. When the top-order fails, the rest of them simultaneously slump down. Not because they can’t do it, just because they do not have enough liberty to rectify themselves at one spot buffing themselves for further games.

Once the batter disappoints, he is sacked straight away with no other trial with other batsmen redeeming him. And when that other batter fails, the PCB has an eye on a vast catalog of alternatives.

The middle-order woes are still a question but they are left unsolved. According to popular opinions, they will be under the dungeon until a fixed, compact, and constant, but not complexed and a lengthy list of players are assayed.

As the T20 World Cup 2021 is contiguous, Pakistan’s chances of making it to the playoffs look in doubt amidst the following upshots. Drop your views in the comments below.
