Pakistan begin T20 World Cup campaign with victory

As the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 is underway, Pakistan faced West Indies in the opening warm-up encounter on Monday at ICC Academy Ground.

Remembering the huge setback from World Cup 2019, the men in green made sure to turn the table this time having a great start ahead of grasping the trophy.

The men in maroon, opting to bat first, could add 130 and lost 7 wickets. Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle contributed with 28 off 24, 23 off 10, 20 off 30 respectively to build up a substandard target, easy to chase for Babar Azam and co.

At first, the green shirts’ bowlers struck hardly letting the West Indies get some extras despite hard hitters in abundance. Undeniably, Hasan Ali was the best bowler from the side picking two wickets and conceding 21 runs but Imad Wasim was way ahead of him with a wicket bowling 3 overs and conceding 6 runs only. Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi, although clasped two wickets apiece but conceded 32, 41 runs respectively.

Whilst chasing, after Mohammad Rizwan was trapped by Ravi Rampaul on 13 off 17, it seemed as a big blow to Pakistan but Babar played a crucial knock-off fifty coming on 41 balls. Mohammad Hafeez, however, had to go back on a duck but Fakhar Zaman, coming at third, tallied 46 off 24 to let the scoreboard look favoring the men in green.

Ironically, the chase came up at 15.3 over sparing seven wickets as the West Indies bowlers did not have much to clinch for their team. Rampaul seized one whereas, Hayden Walsh Jnr had two at economies of 6.33 and 11.71 dispatching 3, 3.3 overs sequentially.
