PSL auction system to be launched replacing PSL draft

PSL auction system to be launched replacing PSL draft

The Pakistan Super League will likely be seeing the PSL auction system replicating traditional PSL draft systems from the upcoming season. Keen to earn hefty revenues, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Ramiz Raja states that the auction can make PSL similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in terms of finances.

PSL auction system to be launched to generate huge revenue

Both, IPL and PSL are world-class leagues with quality players, quality cricket, and hype across the world. However, IPL being 15 years old, holds no competition with Pakistan’s T20 league in terms of age. Also, India’s tournament makes way more pennies than PSL since it is called the world’s cash-richest league.

PSL was imposed to player draft so each franchise could pick top-notch draft with equal salaries in each category due to limited resources and finances. However, Raja is on the verge of launching an auction system allowing specific purses to all franchisees to spend wisely on players. A franchise can only retain a player’s services if it is willing to spend the maximum on him.

“We need to create new properties to be financially independent. We have nothing for now but the PSL and ICC funds. There’s an argument over the model from next year; I want to switch it to an auction model from next year. The market forces are conducive, but we’ll sit down with the franchise owners to discuss it.”

It must be noted PSL 2022 made PKR 540 Crores for the PCB, which is slightly less than what IPL 2022 is going to make. According to reports, this year’s cash-rich league will generate a revenue of over INR 890 Crores for BCCI. Raja says he will only consider PSL equivalent to IPL once the Pakistani contest starts generating more money.

Raja is optimistic to see which players will opt for IPL over PSL once the tournament becomes financially stable in the forthcoming years. He believes PCB can only be rich through its main driver, which is the PSL. His statement came following the fact the players, with central contracts, prefer playing in the BCCI’s contest rather than their national duties.

This is a game of money. When the cricket economy grows in Pakistan, our respect will rise. The main driver of that financial economy is the PSL. If we take the PSL to auction model, increase the purse, then I’ll put it in the IPL bracket. And then we’ll see who goes to play the IPL over the PSL.”
