PSL: Karachi Kings vs Lahore Qalandars rivalry history

The Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars are considered as the “El Classico” of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The Karachi–Lahore cricket rivalry Is the oldest city rivalry between cricket teams Karachi and Lahore. It is considered to be the biggest rivalry in the PSL due to the size of the cities.

The rivalry has been fuelled by the size of the two cities that they play for and historic economic and cultural rivalry. A Karachi–Lahore clash is known typically as a heated contest. The two cities share a rivalry in domestic cricket that dates back to the 1950s and 1960s, with the PSL providing a high-voltage platform that allows it to thrive.

Their PSL record reads as:

Total matches: 11
Won by Karachi Kings: 7
Won by Lahore Qalandars: 4

Both teams have played on 11 occasions against each other, with Karachi Kings winning 7 of them. In the 2016 season, the Karachi Kings won both games against Lahore Qalandars. But then in the 2nd season, Lahore Qalandars won their first game as both teams won against each other.

Karachi won the first game of the 2018 season, while the second match was a close contest which ended in a tie, in the end, Lahore winning in the super overdue to excellent super over bowled by Qalandars’ Sunil Narine. It was considered to be the best Karachi-Lahore game in the PSL.

In the 2019 season, both teams won one game each while in the 2020 season, both teams won one game apiece before facing off in the final.

The final, which was won by the Karachi Kings by 5 wickets, was the most hyped PSL final that took place in the history of the tournament. It was the first final for both Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars. In fact, for Lahore Qalandars, it was their first-ever playoff stage to take part in.

The Karachi Kings restricted Lahore Qalandars to 134-7, despite having a great opening start. The Karachi Kings, led by Babar Azam’s unbeaten 63 of 49 balls, won the match by five wickets to clinch their maiden PSL title.

In Popular Culture

The famous TV series “Family Guy” referred to the Karachi vs Lahore rivalry in episode one (“Stewie’s First Word”) of season 19. At the start of the episode, the main characters Peter, Cleveland, Quagmire and Joe are sitting at the bar, where Quagmire complains about the influx of foreign sports fans on Saturday mornings.

Two Pakistani supporters wearing Lahore jerseys said that “If you’re not rooting for Lahore, please you may leave I can tell you” and “Lahore cricketers are the best and the others are not the best, dear friends”. Joe, who is seen supporting Karachi, quickly covers his jersey as he doesn’t “have a death wish about it.”

That part of the episode went viral across whole Pakistan and it became a massive hit.
