Do you know? Qalandars can still qualify for PSL 9 playoffs

Lahore's chances of making it to the PSL 2024 playoffs seem bleak

The Lahore Qalandars, the reigning champions of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), are facing the dire possibility of elimination after suffering six consecutive defeats in the ongoing ninth season. Their latest setback came at the hands of the Multan Sultans, leaving them firmly rooted at the bottom of the points table.

While mathematically, a glimmer of hope remains. By winning all four of their remaining matches, Lahore could scrape together a total of eight points. However, achieving this feat is a tall order, bordering on unrealistic. Even if they manage this improbable run, their qualification still hinges on favorable outcomes in other matches, making their path to the playoffs extremely challenging.

Historically, securing eight points has allowed a team to sneak into the playoffs. In the 2022 season, Islamabad United managed to grab the fourth and final playoff spot with just eight points, offering a precedent for Lahore’s current predicament.

However, Lahore draw some cautious optimism from the fact that other teams, including Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, and Peshawar Zalmi, have yet to play all their matches. If these teams falter and drop points, it could create an opening for Lahore. But, such an opportunity only presents itself if Lahore consistently wins their remaining games.

Failing to secure a victory in their seventh match will definitively seal Lahore’s fate, officially eliminating them from the competition. Their remaining fixtures include crucial clashes against Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and Quetta Gladiators scheduled for March 2nd, 6th, 9th, and 10th, respectively.

The playoffs, scheduled for March 14th through 18th, will see the Qualifier, Eliminator 1, Eliminator 2, and the Final taking place at the National Bank Stadium. While mathematically possible, Lahore’s journey to the playoffs is fraught with challenges. Additionally, securing big wins in their remaining matches becomes crucial, as they might need a better net run rate to compete with other teams who might end up with eight points as well.

The pressure on Lahore to perform and salvage their campaign is immense. Fans await their upcoming matches with bated breath, hoping to witness a miraculous turnaround in their performance. Some fans even express the sentiment that “the Lahore from the initial seasons is back,” referencing the team’s struggles in the past.

However, the lack of key players like Rashid Khan and a struggling Haris Rauf, coupled with expensive spells from Shaheen Afridi and Zaman Khan, has significantly weakened Lahore’s bowling attack. Additionally, the underutilization of Sikandar Raza as a bowler has further hampered their bowling strategy.

Lahore Qalandars face a mountain to climb in their quest to defend their title. Whether they can defy the odds and rewrite their story in PSL 9 remains to be seen.
