Saeed Ajmal defends Babar Azam against all the odds

Former Pakistani cricketer Saeed Ajmal has defended skipper Babar Azam against the criticism targeting his leadership lately. Currently, Azam has been in hot water after the men in green suffered Test series losses versus Australia and England, respectively and came across two ties versus New Zealand.

Not only the deteriorating performances as the skipper in Tests get everyone’s attention, but Azam could only score 79 runs on 144 balls at an inferior strike rate – Pakistan ended up losing the second test match as a result of below-par batting whilst chasing. And this has become one of the reasons why people are no more enjoying Babar as a skipper across all formats.

Apart from the lashes of fans, many former cricketers have also been raising their voices against Babar to sack him from captaincy. However, Ajmal has played his part as a senior, backing the captain by giving fitting replies to all the critics.

Hitting back at the critics, the former spinner urged,

“If Babar Azam is selfish, then we need two to three additional such players in the team. Babar Azam is a good player and any negative aspect of his game can be rectified,”

He further added,

“There is no need for separate captains in all three formats. If they still want to do it, then they should only opt for separate captains in white and red-ball cricket.”

It is pertinent to mention that Azam and Ajmal are the only two Pakistanis to appear in the top five ICC rankings for batters and bowlers (players), respectively, across all formats.

As reported by ARY Cricket in 2020, Babar Azam’s highest Ranking in tests has been 5th, 3rd in ODIs, and 1st in T20Is. As far as Saeed Ajmal’s highest ranking is concerned, he has been 2nd in Tests and number one in ODIs and t20Is.

As of now (Jan 2023), Babar is the World’s number one ODI player, 4th in T20Is, and 3rd in Tests, and the record still makes him the only second Pakistani to appear in the top five ICC rankings after Ajmal.
