T20 World Cup: What return of Shoaib Malik means to Pakistan?

The late Bob Woolmer once called Shoaib Malik the ‘sharpest tack’ for Pakistan Cricket. The veteran, being the third-ranked player with the longest cricketing career, although stepped as an off-break bowler but built aggressive batting tactics with time.

Now, more known as a batting all-rounder has seized plenty of achievements not only in the shortest format but in the rest of the circuit too. Staying to the topic, Malik returns, as he has been finally named in Pakistan T20 World Cup 2021 squad.

It is said that there is a storm after a silence. The return of Shoaib Malik itself is the biggest storm after days of silence. When the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) named its World Cup squad initially, the fans’ line-up went crazy for inappropriate and Malik-less selection.

Those, who missed out, took it to their social forums to ease the frustration but Malik was nowhere to be seen other than performing in the National T20 Cup. Seeing raw middle-order players was a shock to the Pakistan cricket world that ended on 8th October as the board announced three changes two days prior to the squad submission deadline.

Still, there was no Malik but silence and performance from his end. Sohaib Maqsood, who has marked his international comeback after a long tenure following his past with injury set-up in consecutive years, faced a stroke of bad luck. Despite being in Pakistan T20 World Cup 2021 squad from the primary announcement, he had to be eliminated following his back injury that has gone worst with time and is underscan.

The PCB, consequently, had no option but once again to make a quick change replacing Sohaib with Shoaib cheering up the demands. Undeniably, Malik’s contributions mean more than enough to men in green. The guy has been serving Pakistan Cricket since the late 90s and is one of the very few green shirts’ to still be in the group.

Hard to bid farewell to childhood heroes:

T20 World Cup 2021 might be the last ICC event for Malik and Hafeez:

It was said that Shoaib, who joined T20 cricket back in 2006 alongside his mate, Mohammad Hafeez, could have added an experience of over 42 years if named together in the Pakistan squad. That if has now turned into reality but it might be the last time the Pakistan cricket fraternity will witness the Hafeez-Malik duo playing together in an ICC event.

Almost, there is no role that Malik has not fulfilled for Pakistan Cricket. Being the active, taller fielder with a monstrous record in middle-over are not only his achievements as the spinner has been fit at top-order in short format too. His modern off-spin tricks and flat run-up seizing crucial wickets alongside numerous match-winning knocks are worth mentioning that certainly will be flowing with the legacy this World Cup too.
