This England cricketer does not want to be next Test captain

England’s experienced bowler Stuart Broad has turned down the opportunity coming his way to lead the team in Test cricket. He believes he is not ready to take responsibility whereas, his mate Ben Stokes is a perfect match for the post.

Apparently, Stokes has been the most preferable candidate to take over Joe Root’s captaincy in England’s red-ball cricket. He has been named by the great cricketing legends such as Michael Vaughan, Nasser Hussain, and others. Apart from Stokes, Stuart, Jos Buttler, and Rory Burns are in the lane of favourite contenders.

It must be noted Root stepped down from Test captaincy following the series defeat versus the West Indies. There already had been bashes for him after the humiliating Ashes Test series, losing by 4-0. Although Root has been one of the legendary skippers in the nation’s Test cricket history, the team’s turmoil over the last 17 games has had enough pressure on the lad to give up his job.

Root and co only have managed a single victory in their last 17 matches. He believed it is the right time to quit, giving others a chance to come forward after his stellar 5-year old leadership career. Not to forget, he has led the side in the most number of cricket matches (64) by any captain, ending 27 on a winning note, and losing 26.

Stuart Broad prioritizes shining in national colours than choosing England’s Test captaincy

Broad, writing in his Mail on Sunday Column, stated that he is looking to bounce back in the national squad after he was controversially removed before the West Indies series. He elaborated he is looking to do well for his County. Furthermore, the bowler wrote,

“Naturally, I am aware that my name has been touted as a potential successor to Joe as England captain and I guess that is because I am an experienced centrally contracted player who has been around the international game a long time,”

“It is not something I have given any thought to because firstly I am not currently in possession of a shirt within the England Test team and my focus is very much on changing that by taking wickets for Nottinghamshire over the next few weeks,”
