Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam spoke to ‘The News’ ahead of the second One-Day International against New Zealand about his focus on achieving victories for the country rather than individual milestones. Babar Azam prioritizes team success over personal milestones

Azam emphasized that he has never focused on individual milestones and instead prioritizes delivering impactful performances that win matches for the team. He believes that by playing with this mentality, players can achieve milestones along the way. “The aim should always be to give impactful performances. These milestones and records are byproducts of that mentality,” he said.

Azam’s statements reflect his commitment to striving for the country’s achievements rather than personal ambition. “I do not have any personal ambition. What I want is to strive for the country’s success. Each time I land at the wicket, I want to win the day for the team and for the country. I never have focused on achieving one record or the other,” he said.

The importance of team culture and support also came up in Azam’s statements. He emphasized the significance of backing and encouraging each other, spending time with each other, and standing by teammates to become a well-bonded unit. “We back each other in an effort to get the best results for the team and for the country,” he said.

Azam’s teammate Fakhar Zaman praised his and Mohammad Rizwan’s achievements for the country, and Azam reflected on the importance of team spirit in such statements. “What Fakhar has said is a reflection of our team culture. We spend time with each other a lot more than we do with our families, and to become a well-bonded unit, it is important to stand by your teammates and enjoy each other’s success,” he said.

When asked about Shan Masood’s below-par performance in ODI cricket, Azam chose to keep his cards closer to his chest for the moment. “I would like to keep the cards closer to my chest at the moment,” he said.

Azam’s statements highlight his commitment to the team’s success over personal ambition and his understanding of the significance of team culture, support, and encouragement in achieving success for the team and the country.
