The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, has announced that the schedule for this year’s ODI World Cup in India will be unveiled around the time of the World Test Championship final. The tournament is expected to take place in October-November, but the schedule has been delayed due to Pakistan’s matches.
The BCCI is keen on playing against Pakistan during the Asia Cup in September, which will be held at a neutral venue. However, Pakistan has threatened to boycott the World Cup if the BCCI does not send its team for the Asia Cup.
The highly anticipated Test cricket final between India and Australia will be held from June 7-11 at the Oval, which is likely to be the venue for the announcement of the World Cup schedule.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated, “The venues for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 will be decided at a press conference during the ICC World Test Championship Final.” He further added that the complete schedule for the tournament will also be revealed. Major cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata are being considered as potential venues for the World Cup matches.
The fate of the Asia Cup is expected to be determined during discussions on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) final between the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans. Jay Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has invited the cricket board presidents of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka to the IPL final to discuss the details of the tournament.
Shah explained, “The future of the Asia Cup 2023 will be decided once we have a meeting with the ACC members (Test-playing nations) and the Associate nations.”
India and Pakistan, two cricketing giants and arch-rivals, have not played each other on home soil since 2012 and only meet in multinational tournaments at neutral venues.
This development has raised anticipation among cricket fans worldwide as they eagerly await the announcement of the World Cup schedule and hope for a potential India-Pakistan clash on the cricket field.
