Who will replace Aaron Finch as Australia's ODI captain?

Australia’s limited-over skipper Aaron Finch has decided to keep his leadership and batting limited to only T20I format bidding farewell to One-Day Internationals. The aggressive batter will play the last ODI of his career on Sunday, as the Yellow men will encounter Kane Williamson’s New Zealand in the third ODI.

Finch, who will defend the T20 World Cup title in October this year at his own backyard, started his One-Day International career in 2013. He was appointed Australia’s white-ball skipper in 2018 after the sandpaper gate scandal, that saw fall of Steve Smith as the captain.

The 35-year old has donned the national jersey in 145 ODIs amassing 5401 runs at an average of 39.1. Seeking his current ODI performances, he believes the team will be needing a better ODI skipper who can lift the trophy in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Unfortunately, one of the best limited-over skippers averages only 13 in the format in the calendar year. His participation in the team for further encounters was doubted but he will be looking to end his stint on a winning note. Australia already lead by 2-0 with one match to spare.

Since Australia are left captain-less in the ODI format, a few contenders including David Warner, Alex Carey, and Pat Cummins are probable to take over Finch’s regime.

Considering Cummins, the bowler has proved himself as one of the best leaders in Test cricket as he replaced Tim Paine. Pat started his leadership stint on a good note, winning the Ashes by 4-0, with the Sydney Test washed away.

Warner, who suffered a lifetime captaincy ban after his involvement in sandpaper gate scandal in 2018, is in touch with the board to lift the ban. He is once again seeking to enjoy the captaincy perks as he was the vice-captain back then alongside skipper Smith.

As far as Alex is considered, he has been one of the vice captains to work under Finch. Also, in the Finch’s absence, the wicketkeeping batter has lead the team on the West Indie tour. Since he is the regular part of white-ball team, it makes him one of the strong contestants to take the charge.
