Why Misbah, Waqar have left coaching roles suddenly?

Pakistan’s head coach, Misbah ul Haq, and the bowling coach, Waqar Younis, have stepped down from their respective roles as the news goes viral straight after the Pakistan T20 World Cup squad announcement.

On Monday morning, the duo informed their decisions to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), but the lookouts are now clueless to see their retirement as coaches just before the mega event.

Clearly, the T20 World Cup squad has been finalized by the old management. Still, new ones might have their say as Ramiz Raja, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Abdul Razzaq are steady to take over chairman (contract based), head, bowling coaching vacancies, respectively (interim coaches). The team is also left without the batting coach as Younis Khan parted ways with the board a few months ago.

Notably, till yet, PCB has announced Mushtaq and Razzaq’s involvement as the interim coaches for the New Zealand series. The decision is likely to be extended till the mega event.

It is a clever step taken from the Misbah-Waqar duo to proffer all the blame falling in their laps to the new, upcoming PCB management. The fans took it to social media to criticize the coaches and selector Mohammad Wasim for poor and unjustified squad selection.

Apart from the writer’s, fans’ opinions, PCB believes it is the right time to utilize Abdul Razzaq, who won three domestic titles in 2020-21 including Mushtaq who is inspiring as the domestic coach.

It is pertinent to mention that the most anticipated ones, Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Mohammad Amir, and Wahab Riaz, have been left out. PCB’s decision to add inexperienced Azam Khan and Khushdil Shah is vastly under criticism. See here.

Waqar said as Misbah, and he joined together; hence, he followed Misbah’s footsteps of refraining from retiring duties together.

Fans believe that despite all destruction caused to Pakistan Cricket, it should have commenced till the World Cup 2021. It feels like a game to see inconsistent coaches, selectors, chairman coming and going on and off just a few days before the World Cup. Similar is the case with the players.

Undoubtedly, it takes months or probably years for a player, coach, management to settle while implementing their new rules and approach to a system.
