Why was MS Dhoni made captain? Reveals former BCCI selector

MS Dhoni in legal trouble, FIR filed against him

Former India captain MS Dhoni’s impact on Indian cricket remains unparalleled. With three ICC titles under his belt – T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011, and Champions Trophy 2013 – Dhoni’s leadership prowess is widely recognized. The decision to appoint him as captain during the 2007 T20 World Cup proved to be a stroke of genius, as Dhoni guided the team to new heights.

Bhupinder Singh, a former India selector, shed light on the factors that led to Dhoni’s captaincy. Alongside his automatic selection in the team, Dhoni’s cricketing acumen, body language, ability to lead from the front, and man-management skills impressed the board. Singh emphasized the positive feedback they received, highlighting Dhoni’s approach to the game and his interactions with others.

Dhoni’s influence extended beyond his tenure as captain, as he mentored current stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He recognized Rohit’s potential and encouraged him to open the innings, a move that proved instrumental in Rohit’s rise as one of the finest ODI openers.

Kohli, too, credits Dhoni for protecting him when selectors contemplated dropping him from the team. This support allowed Kohli to flourish, establishing himself as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history and eventually taking over the reins as India’s captain.

However, Indian fans yearn for Dhoni’s Midas touch, as the team has been unable to clinch an ICC title since his captaincy tenure ended. Despite reaching two finals and a semi-final under Kohli’s leadership, India faltered at crucial moments. Similarly, under Rohit’s captaincy, they came agonizingly close, but couldn’t secure the trophy.

The absence of Dhoni’s calm and tactical genius has been keenly felt, highlighting the immense impact he had on the team’s success. Indian cricket continues its pursuit of another ICC title, hoping to fill the void left by the departure of their revered leader.
