Darren Sammy has been appointed as independent non-member director of Cricket West Indies (CWI) a day ago. He was one of the three appointments of Independent Directors who were approved last week in the Board of Directors meeting. He will render his services to his national board for the next two years.
He flanked Trinidadian attorney Mrs. Debra Coryat-Patton and Jamaican surgeon Dr. Akshai Mansingh. Two of them were re-appointed for the second term.
On being appointed for the role, he added,
“It is an honor to be appointed as a CWI Director; this is another great opportunity for me to give my best to West Indies cricket in a new way, off the field. All my local, regional, and international experiences have prepared me to make a significant ongoing impact in West Indies cricket. I am excited and thankful for the chance to serve and look forward to giving back to the sport and region that I love so much.”
Will Darren Sammy coach Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 7?
Sammy, the two times T20 World Cup champion, played the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 final last year. This year, he has been added to the non-paying panel of the league this May. He will now serve his team, St Lucia Zouks as the cricket consultant and the brand ambassador.
He also is the mentor of the Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2021). PZ has been boundary-less as they have reached the final for the first time in Sammy’s coaching. Earlier, the Yellow Storm has made it to the grand finale four times. Notably, Sammy’s team will combat Multan Sultans on 24th June struggling to bring the second trophy home.
The question that mounts is if he will mentor the Zalmi crew in the PSL 7 after being appointed as the independent non-member director for CWI. Logically, as being hired for the role, he will continue to serve St Lucia Zouks hence, it will not be surprising to see him coaching Zalmi in PSL 7 too.
