Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews’ participation in the Lanka Premier League (LPL 2021) has been put in doubt after he has sustained quadriceps strain during the ongoing Test match against West Indies.

The player hopes to play all the further matches except missing the initial few. Still, the doctors have suggested Mathews’ strain could be more serious, eliminating him from the entire season.

It is pertinent to mention that the LPL 2021 will kick-start by December 5 and run until December 23. The first match is to be played between Galle Gladiators and Jaffna King.

SLC’s chief medical officer Dr. Daminda Attanayake told ESPNcricinfo

“One MRI scan has been conducted, but the results are not clear. We’ll need to conduct another MRI around December 4, and we’ll have a clearer picture.”

He sustained the injury while running for the single on the Day 1 of the Galle Test. Although he was immediately retired hurt but returned to the crease after the fall of the eight wicket.

Mathews has a long history of leg injuries, with problems to his hamstrings, quads, and calves causing him to miss months of cricket at a time, since 2015.

Will Colombo Kings name another captain than Angelo Mathews for LPL 2021?

He has been inducted as part of the Colombo Stars franchise in the LPL. His chances to play as a captain were too certain, though that had not been officially confirmed yet either. If he will be eliminated from the play, Colombo will have no option, but to opt for another captain.
