Virat Kohli will have to step down as a captain: says Monty Panesar

Virat Kohli’s captaincy flop at the end of any World event is not hidden from anyone. The Indian skipper has failed numerous times in the terminating stages despite being a world-class player and a captain with the highest winning ratios often.

Being appointed as the limited-overs skipper for India back in 2017, team India is yet to sustain any ICC or World Cricket title under his leadership. India faced a humiliating defeat in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and then bent down against New Zealand in the semifinal of the ICC world cup 2019.

Also, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are one of three who have never clinched an IPL trophy yet. Despite being strong throughout the seasons, the Kohli-led team is known to collapse in the final game or in the playoffs.

Keeping the consequences in mind, the former English cricketer, Monty Panesar says that it will be time for Kohli to step down as India’s captain if he fails to win either ICC T20 or World Cup as both are supposed to take place in the nation.

Virat Kohli will have to step down as a captain: says Monty Panesar

“If India have a questionable series. If they don’t win the T20 World Cup, or the World Cup, because they’re both in India. I think after that Virat Kohli will have to step down. His captaincy is there but he definitely needs to win one out of the T20 or the World Cup in India,” Panesar told Sportskeeda.

Notably, after Virat left for India in the midst of Aus vs Ind tests due to his first child birth, Ajinkya Rahane took over the lead ending up with a series win. Speaking about the occasion, Panesar has uttered below written comments.

“It’s an interesting debate. I think Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma’s combination works really well when they’re both given the leadership. It will be the skill of Virat Kohli to manage all the leaders now. This is going to be the next part of his captaincy,” he stated.

“He likes his dictatorship style but this time he’ll have to start listening to other people. There may be times during the Test series when he may have to listen to the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri, and Rohit Sharma,” Panesar added.
