5 batsmen who scored century on their 100th Test

Yesterday, England’s captain Joe Root became the ninth player to score a century on his 100th Test match.

In all total, there are nine cricketers who have scored a century on their 100th Test match. In the list, there are now three English players after Root being latest inclusion, two Pakistanis, two South African, and one each from Australia and West Indies.

Today, from the nine players, we will look at five batsmen who scored a century in their 100th Test match.

1. Joe Root

The latest inductee in the list, Joe Root is enjoying his last few matches. He has scored great runs for England over the years and some of them were memorable. Joe Root became the third England player after MC Cowdry (in 1968 against Australia) and Alec Stewart (in 2000 against West Indies).

Now that he scored his double century, he became the first player in Test cricket’s history to score a double ton in his 100th Test match.

2. Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting is the only man in the history of Test cricket to score two centuries in his 100th Test match. He brought it up against South Africa in Sydney in 2006, where Australia won the match by eight wickets. Ricky Ponting scored 120 in the first innings and then 143 not out in the chase of 287 as Australia sealed the three-match Test series 2-0. Ricky Ponting’s innings was one of the fabulous innings and is highly regarded.

3. Graeme Smith

Graeme Smith scored 131 in 2012

The South African captain and legend Graeme Smith scored his 100th Test match against England at London in 2012. Graeme Smith scored 131 in South Africa’s total of 637-2 (Declared), a match remembered for Hashim Amla’s brilliant 311 not out in South Africa’s victory by an innings and 12 runs and eventually, winning the three-match series 2-0.

Wisdens called it as one of the finest performance by a captain.

4. Inzamam ul-Haq

Inzamam ul-Haq is one of Pakistan’s greatest player. Captain Inzamam ul-Haq was playing his 100th Test match against Pakistan’s arch-rivals India in 2005 tour. Again, this match was remembered for his partner, Younis Khan, and his lovely 267. Inzamam ul-Haq himself scored 184 in Pakistan’s total of 570, where Pakistan would go on to win the match by 168 runs.

Inzamam ul-Haq became the second Pakistan batsman to achieve this feat after Javed Miandad, who did it against India in Lahore in 1989.

5. Hashim Amla

One of South African greats, Hashim Amla was the second South African after Graeme Smith to score a century in his 100th Test match. In 2017, he scored it against the touring Sri Lankan side. Hashim Amla scored 134 in South Africa’s victory by an innings and 118 runs. This resulted in a whitewashed in the three-match series as well.
